Upcoming Urban Fantasy Novel Brings Magic and Fantastic Creatures to Minneapolis

MILTON, ONTARIO, May 6, 2022 – AJ Grey: tattoo artist, witch, magical enforcer, and star of new urban fantasy novel Between Death and a Hard Place by Joe Weinberg, coming this autumn from Milton, Ontario-based publisher Brain Lag.

AJ Grey is a tattoo artist. And a witch. She tracks down ghosts, hunts rogue necromancers, and hangs out with demons. It’s her job to help the world keep its head in the sand about the supernatural creatures that exist all around them.

As she is working to help one particular ghost after saving her from one particular rogue necromancer, she learns something chilling. The population of witches in the Twin Cities has increased by such a margin that the other supernaturals will be forced to re-establish the balance—by way of slaughter. And she might be called upon to help them do it.

She will help the other witches, despite how much they despise her, if only to prove to them that she has good qualities and is worthy of being part of a coven. And while she’s at it, she’ll help a ghost, the ghost’s former lover, and even her demon friend, Maxine DeFleur. And hopefully, she’ll do it all without getting killed herself. But she has three days. Plenty of time, right?

The book will be released October 14 and the cover art will be revealed June 17. Preorders for the book will open at that time.

Weinberg says, “I wrote several stories with [AJ], and started to fall in love with the way she thinks, the way she talks, and the person she is. My favorite parts of AJ are how she can be a strong female character without the male gaze and without being a man with woman parts. Her gender isn’t exactly important, but I like to think it’s a solid manifestation of my own female side as someone who is non-binary.”

Weinberg, recently of Minnesota, has written supplement books for the Vampire: the Masquerade and Werewolf: the Apocalypse table top game systems, articles for magazines, academic publications, and so many novels. He also works with Mark Rein-Hagen (creator of V:tM and W:tA) on the new project LostLorn, where he is both one of the writers and one of the editors. He has a PhD and two Master’s degrees, and spent about a decade teaching.

Between Death and a Hard Place is Brain Lag’s second urban fantasy novel and thirty-ninth book released. Weinberg joins nineteen other authors in the Brain Lag lineup. This book will be the tenth of twelve releases in 2022.
