Cover Art Revealed for Diverse Glasgow-Based Urban Fantasy Novel

MILTON, ONTARIO, March 18, 2022 – After its initial announcement last month, upcoming urban fantasy novel Wild Magic by debut author Ieuan Ledger gets a little closer to release with the revealing of its cover artwork.

The cover features the main character, a Black man, holding a magical flame in his hand, while a ghostly train and forest frame him.

The book is now available for preorder through the web store of publisher Brain Lag and is making its way into the catalogues of bookstores everywhere. Wild Magic will be available in trade paperback (268 pages, $21.99 CAD) and ebook ($4.99 USD/CAD) formats. It will be released on July 8th, 2022.

Ledger, a graduate of the inaugural Fantasy Literature postgraduate masters course at Glasgow University, wanted to give their own spin to the ‘magical detective’ trope with this book by highlighting the diversity of the Scottish city. Wild Magic features a cast of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ characters, characters from different classes, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as several characters in various stages of recovery from trauma and abuse.

The story focuses on Professional Curse-Breaker Rudy Renfrew, reluctantly hired to find a missing girl. Although he has no experience with investigation, he utilizes his connections, including to the city’s homeless community, the university, and the god of the subway, to discover that answers may lie outside his beloved Glasgow in the highlands of Scotland. The ancient and wild forests and mountains intimidate a man who “liked to brag that he could tell where he was [in Glasgow] by how the ground felt below his boots.”

Raised on the coast of Fife in Scotland, Ieuan Ledger-McQuade moved to Glasgow at eighteen to study, and to enjoy life in the ‘big city’; now living in Mexico City, they have since reconsidered this title. Working as a freelance writer/teacher, Ieuan lives with their partner and three dogs, two of which are mostly housetrained.

Wild Magic is the first urban fantasy book from Milton, Ontario-based science fiction and fantasy publisher Brain Lag. Ledger joins seventeen other authors and thirty-six other books as of its release. Ledger has already begun writing a sequel to the book.
